What says “I Love You” like beer poking?
Bierstacheln is a German tradition of plunging a hot steel rod into malt-forward beers, which transforms the flavor profile and composition of the beer as you drink it.
In honor of Cupid’s holiday, we’ll be “poking” beers Friday evening on the patio.
What is Bierstacheln?
Translating to “beer sting” or “beer spike” in German, bierstacheln originally began as a way to keep your beer warm enough to drink in the colder months.
It’s since been embraced as a way to enhance the flavors in darker, maltier beers. The “stachel” or spike is heated to more than 100 degrees over an open flame and then plunged into a beer for 4-5 seconds.
Inside the beer, the heated rod generates foam as it caramelizes the beer inside the glass, transforming unfermented sugars into a roasted marshmallow flavor and smoothing out the beer.
The spiking creates a dense, warm foam with a cooler, less carbonated beer underneath, and the beer is creamier overall.
How do I try it?
Join us on the patio on Friday, February 14, with your Valentine!
You’ll want to order a beer with a hefty malt profile and ask to have your beer spiked at our bierstacheln station on the patio.
It’s a Valentine’s Day you won’t soon forget!
